, victor, a u.s. official tells cnn the fbi was investigating a tip that david petraeus was involved in an extramarital affair with paula broadwell. she is his biographer. broadwell spent a year with petraeus in afghanistan interviewing him for the book she co-wrote about him. it's not clear whether broadwell is the woman with whom petraeus has admitted to having this affair that led to this resignation. the official says that the fbi counterintelligence unit investigated the tip to see if there was a potential security risk, whether petraeus could possibly be blackmailed. the official tells cnn there was no suggestion the fbi was investigating petraeus for any possible wrongdoing, but the concern, rather, was that he might be putting himself in a vulnerable position. >> we know that a lot of the questions from online that i've read, some of the comments on cnn.com, there's questions about the timing. let's start with what it comes after, the presidential election. what if we found out about that connection, if any, and why this comes just days after the election? >> reporter: well,

our cnn correspondents across israel as well as in gaza right now. earlier in the day, i went to orbkalon where i saw what was going on firsthand on the israeli side of the border. as soon as we got there, the sirens actually started going on. you could see people running towards shelters. i started running after israeli soldiers demanded that all of us -- our cnn crew, myself, we get to a shelter. usually they have about 30 seconds once the sirens go off before there actually is a rocket or missile that reaches the ground. in this particular case, when we were running, we got to a shelter. it was packed with soldiers, with civilians. and then we finally heard that thud. in this particular case, that iron dome, the israeli anti-missile defense shield, which has been financed at least in some measure by the united states, it worked. and the incoming rokts and missiles were destroyed in the air. later we walked outside and saw that plume of smoke showing those missiles, the rockets had been destroyed. earlier in the day at that same school where we had been -- the iron dome didn

we've got much more ahead on cnn "saturday morning" which starts right now. good morning, everyone. i'm randi kaye. victor blackwell is on assignment. it is 8:00 on the east coast, 5:00 out west. thanks so much for starting your day with us. we start in the middle east. this has become a fairly common sight in gaza this week. israeli planes have been carrying out air strikes over gaza since wednesday. meanwhile militants on the other side have fired more than 200 rockets into israel. israel is massing troops near the border with gaza. they have got 30,000 troops there now and have 75,000 reservists getting ready. at least 42 people have died since the operation began. meanwhile, world leaders including representatives from the united states and the u.n. are calling on both sides to show restraint, but restraint seems to be in short order right now. ourarah sidner is live in gaza with a bird's eye view of the conflict. are you seeing more air strikes right now? >> reporter: absolutely, and in just the past few minutes we could hear the loud blasts of air strikes all night long into

. have a great weekend. >>> it's the top of the hour. you're in the cnn newsroom. i'm susan hendricks in today for fredricka whitfield. we have new information on the david petraeus resignation. the highly dedicated army colonel quit after announcing he had an extramarital affair. it's an fbi affair that's sounding alarms. the fbi was investigating some suspicious e-mails and found some e-mails between paula broadwell and david petraeus. broadwell is the woman who wrote his biography. the fbi looks to see whether his communications had been compromised, and they said they had not been. now, petraeus was interviewed by the fbi, but it's not clear if broadwell has been questioned and if she will be. a u.s. official said petraeus was never a target of an investigation and that a tip about an affair led to that probe. now, general petraeus was scheduled to testify next week about the attack on the u.s. consulate in libya. now what happens now that he's gone? suzanne kelly is in washington with that part of this big story. >> susan, as washington reels from the announcement not only that d
